Inspiration

I spent the day at a genealogy conference and I feel like a sponge that is absolutely saturated.  If you have never been to one and you love genealogy, all I can say is go, go, go!! I challenge you to treat yourself and you will come home inspired and eager to try out different things.

Today I learned:

  • How important saving my work in as many different formats and places as I can manage.
  • Blogging  – not just about writing blogs, but learning how to find ,use and mine information out of blogs.
  • How to squeeze /interrogate my records and think outside of the box when using them.
  • Social Networking.  What can I say, but I’m already on board, hooked and absolutely love the benefits of many Social Network activities (next I need to learn how to work all these new things into my schedule and still have a life with my family)
  • I also learned more about organization and conservation from someone who thinks it’s ok *gasps* to break books apart and copy them.   Please note that as someone who has worked in a library for over 25 years, this absolutely horrified me and made sense all at the same time.
  • About my Genes!  Can my family history research help to save lives?

The by-product of this conference was that I met a lot of lovely people who will become friends,  heard wonderful family stories, shared tips and tricks and topped off the whole day with a marvelous dinner.

What more could a Genealogist want?

Link Library “Communities” section

I’m in the process of adding a “communities” section to the individual counties pages.  I’d like to highlight small community websites that have historical/genealogical significance.  Please contact me if you’d like to recommend websites to be added.  Here’s an example of the type of website I had in mind. (Tal-y-bont, Ceredigion Community Website)

Between courses, work and website updates, I’ve been remiss in producing blog posts, but hopefully that will resolve itself quickly!

If I won a lottery. My genealogy top 10 wish list.

When my husband and I travel, we inevitably end up having crazy conversations about what we’d do if we won the lottery.  These usually happen when we’re on our way home and not looking forward to being back at work.  As I was working around the house this morning, I started to think about my top ten list genealogy-wise, if there were no restrictions on time, travel or finances – a genealogical heaven, so to speak.  The list is purely for fun and is a very different wish list from my genealogy ‘want to find’ list.  

Here’s the list, which of course begins with me quitting my job!

  1. Book a ticket to Europe. I’m going to Wales (Aberystwyth area), England (Manchester area), then Poland & Ukraine (this may take a long time, I’ve got lots of ancestral places to see in these areas, so I’ll include number 2 as part of this process). 
  2.  Buy a house in Wales, which will be our summer home and close to the National Library of Wales (It will have an ocean view).
  3. I’m going to take my Mum & daughter along for the UK parts of the trip as we’ve all dreamed of a research trip there for so long. 
  4. Meet two new relatives in the UK that I’ve made contact with in the past couple of years, and visit uncles, aunts and cousins to ‘interview’ them in person.
  5. Take a trip to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. (A long time dream of mine)
  6. In my new house will be a library housing as many history/genealogy books as I can fit!
  7. In my new house is a room just for my genealogy – with a brand new computer, two monitors and many filing cabinets.  The walls will be covered in maps and photos.  (If the lottery win is large enough, it will be climate controlled!)
  8. While I’m in Wales, I want to become fluent in Welsh, so I’ll take a Welsh immersion course.
  9. A good camera of course, for all the photographs I’ll be taking.
  10. I will complete my genealogical certification.

A bonus for me is that my husband has offered to travel with me to any of these places that have a golf course.  So now we’re all set, just one thing left to do………
